The Amount Matters
The Amount Matters
Series: Giving to God's Delight
When it comes to giving, people often remark that the amount isn’t what matters…what matters most is the heart. But that is counterintuitive. In order for the heart to be engaged, the amount has to matter. Many fund-raising campaigns use the slogans, “no gift is too small” or “every gift can make a difference”. But these don’t connect the heart with the gift. At best, they help to see that a need is met so that people can feel good about themselves and at worst, they put us under the delusion that we are generous when we are really “tight” and greedy.
When God considered the amount it would cost him to redeem us “lost and condemned creatures,” his heart was fully engaged. “He did not spare his only Son but gave him up for us all” (Romans 8). Regarding our gifts to God, the amount matters to him because the amount matters to our hearts. Connecting our hearts with our gifts delights God and bring us joy as we realize that he is pleased.
